Centenarians share their tips for living to 100

Living to 100 is a combo of many things including good genes, good luck, diet, exercise and more. If you ask any centenarian their tips to living to and past 100 years old, the advice varies. Some of our favorite tips from those who’ve reached this amazing milestone are below. Check it out!

Agnes Fenton of New Jersey is 110. She credits her long life to booze. Fenton says her boozy habit started 70 years ago when a doctor advised her to add in the “Champagne of Beers” to her diet. Fenton took that advice to heart, having three bottles of Miller High Life and a glass of whiskey daily.

Gertrude Weaver, who lived to 116 years had the best advice on living a long fruitful life. She credited being nice with her long life. Her advice for a long life: “Treat people right and be nice to other people the way you want them to be nice to you,” she told TIME in 2014. Weaver also credited her lack of chronic health problems to not drinking or smoking and getting plenty of sleep.

George Boggess who is currently 103 hopes to live to 105. He’s served in World War II, marched with Dr. King, and served at the DC Superior Court. His advice for living a long life: lots of walking. “I attribute my longevity to a great extent to walking, not being in the back of the car strapped down.” You heard the man, get out there and get moving.

Misao Okawa, was the oldest person in the world at 117 before she passed in 2015. Living in Japan, she credited her long life to her diet of sushi, getting 8 hours of sleep each night, and taking time to relax. Japan has one of the highest rates of people over 100 years, which is attributed to the country’s low-fat diet filled with rice and sushi.

Paul Marcus who is 101 attributes fitness to his long life. He’s a regular at his local fitness center, even at his age. His second secret is “ice cream.” Paul says he eats whatever he wants and tries not to be “too healthy.”

There’s no one secret to living to be over 100. You have to have all the right circumstances line up right and figure out what works for your body and life. However…we like some of the ideas above. Just consult your doctor before undertaking a life changing habit.
